EAST ANGLIA NEWS: Massive shake up of Norfolk and Suffolk boundaries planned

>> 07 July, 2008

The Boundary Committee for England have today announced their draft proposals for Norfolk and Suffolk - though the announcement page just heads it Norfolk....
What they are proposing is:
• a Norfolk unitary authority comprising the existing county of Norfolk and the Lowestoft area of Suffolk.
• an Ipswich & Felixstowe unitary authority and a Suffolk unitary authority comprising the rest of the county apart from the Lowestoft area.
This set of plans will really put the cat among the pigeons!
I can see friends and colleagues who wanted a unitary Norwich being very unhappy with the planned unitary Norfolk.
I think friends and colleagues in Ipswich will be very pleased with the proposal for the new "Greater Ipswich". But I can see rioting on the streets of Lowestoft as they get effectively moved into Norfolk!

Sadly those Lib Dems in Norwich who sided with the Unitary "Greater Norwich" option have been made to look very silly indeed, but they never should have supported the proposal in the first place.

Alternatively Max Caller may come out of it looking very silly, which won't be the first time!
