Errr. Yes Michael White... but you miss the point!

>> 04 February, 2008

The Guardian's Michael White on his political blog today says:

The appetite of 24/7 news for fresh headlines should not be allowed to stampede public life into ever-more frantic and ill-considered idiocy. We get enough already. Nor should Conway be expelled, contrary to what Frank Field MP - a clever, delightful man with ham-fisted political instincts - suggests. Conway is not a member of the Commons catering staff, as you seem to think, Frank, he was ELECTED by the voters of Old Bexley and Sidcup. It's between him and them.
When fellow MPs and the hacks start picking who gets to be an MP we will be on the slide. Bye bye, awkward squad!

But the point is Michael, that the voters of Old Bexley & Sidcup are powerless to do anything about it. The nearest we have to gauge public opinion are the polls being run by myself and the local paper. As Anthony hook points out we don't have recall ballots.
If my email inbox, the comments on local newspaper websites, the comments on the Facebook group, the vox pops in local papers are all to be trusted (and what people say to me in the constituency) - then he should go. But they are all powerless to do anything about it. He can just sit and take his salary until the next General Election and nobody can do anything about it.
