Incumbents score 100% in euro selections
>> 10 November, 2007
I see that the incumbents have scored 100% in the euro selections.
Can we now have the tearing up of selection rules for the Euro and GLA lists to allow people to campaign properly for selection? And in the process effectively remove the huge advantage incumbents have. (note I will not be applying for any Euro or GLA list in the future).
Good to see Ed Maxfield, Jonathan Fryer, Catherine Bearder and Linda Jack in second places in the East Midlands, London, the South East and Eastern regions.

Completely agree. We have a ludicrous incumbency advantage with MEPs able to spend large amounts contacting members with full colour glossy publications until the selection process formally starts - and challengers constrained from doing anything serious in response once it has started.
They were actually allowed to put out a glossy report AFTER nominations had closed.
I couldn't agree more.
Duncan, you know my views!!
The rules as they stand lend full weight to incumbents ensuring they continue to top all lists.
And we keep on hearing how BME candidates and others 'don't campaign hard enough!'
But is it really all that different to automatically reselecting sitting MPs?
Yes it is different because:
1. The MP rules were introduced at the formation of the party (from the SDP rules) to prevent the sort of Militant deposing of MPs seen in 1980s Labour.
2. We claim it is a democratic selection, so it should be fair (we do after all keep banging on about being "fair" in our public campaigning.
