A good week to be a Liberal Democrat
>> 21 June, 2007
I have to say it is a good week to be a Liberal Democrat.
Firstly we had the leak of Ming's team looking for him to be more "spikey" - something I witnessed in Wyboston at the weekend. Bringing out the anti-establishment, reforming, pro human rights, anti poverty, anti ID, anti the Blairite/Cameronite illiberal gloss agenda Ming is good news.
And the events of the last couple of days have done nothing but emphasise it. Gordon Brown's manouevering was without a doubt designed to try to split Liberal Democrats as he mounts his unelected throne. And the reaction by Liberal Democrats? Splits, arguments, irrepairable schisms?
No. Liberal Democrats from across the spectrum have condemned Gordon Brown's moves. Why?
Well, we are united in our belief in Liberal values.
And the main reason Gordon got it wrong? Because Machiavellians will never understand Liberals.
Now we can continue to set our distinct Liberal Democrat agenda, while the other two parties continue to play their media driven agenda for an illiberal "centre ground" rather than truly tackling the issues that matter.

Good perspective: I barely heard the L word once on TV though. I think it was a missed opportunity to point out that Labour is not a liberal party. Getting that in with a list of two or three offences against liberalism - ID cards, snooping state, nanny state, worth a lot of paper through doors.
